I Made Sutama will talk about the fascinating techniques and traditions behind the Balinese Ogoh-Ogoh Masks and puppets from Bali.
Ogoh-ogoh is a big puppet (2 meters - 5 meters) made out of wood, bamboo and paper. Its form is usually a beast or scary creature, made according to local Bali story or from Ramayana & Mahabharata. It is made by communities to celebrate Balinese new year, with parade, dance and Balinese traditional music and burnt.
More about I Made Sutama
I Made Sutama is a Balinese artist living and working in Vilnius, Lithuania. He studied traditional art (wood carving) from age 12, then continued to Art High School SMK N 1 Sukawati. After that, he went to Art Institute of Denpasar Bali.
From 2005 he worked professionally as a “ogoh-ogoh” creator. I Made Sutama believes making “ogoh-ogoh” it’s not just about creating art, it’s about working together with the community, it is about sharing ideas and energy with all the community members.

Yes - this talk is free to attend and is fully funded by Arts Council England however spaces are limited.
